Fatigue & Working Hours Assessment

If employees or contractors working for your organisation work long hours, or undertake long drives to and from the workplace, your organisation could be at risk of a fatigue related incident or accident. The results of such accidents can have an overwhelming impact on the individuals involved, as well as their families, work colleagues, rescue personnel, and management whether they occur during work hours or not. The pain and suffering reverberates throughout your organisation in many ways, and often for long periods of time, and as a consequence prevention should be the focus of every business.

The graphs provided in our calculators have been produced based on research evidence compiled in relation to fatigue management, and the graphical representation of risks provided by the Western Australia Commission for Occupational Safety & Health, Code of Practice: Working Hours, 2006, and the NSW Government Industry & Investment and NSW Mine Safety Advisoryl Council, 2009 in Australia. Australia has undertaken some leading work in the area of fatigue management research and practices, particularly in recent years, and as such these guidelines are suitable for any organisation, anywhere in the world, as the human condition of fatigue is not bound by national borders.

Below is a demonstration of how the graphs work. The topics covered include daily work hours, work hours with travel time, quarterly and annual cycles and night shift. We have provided the Fatigue and Working Hours Risk Assessment free as an excel spreadsheet that you can download, but permission is only granted for you to use the calculator for your own organisation, and it cannot be copied, amended or resold (see End-User Agreement in Legal section for more details). When assessing fatigue risks these graphs should be used as a guide only. The graphs should be used in conjunction with a complete risk assessment undertaken by a suitably qualified person/s, with consideration of relevant facts including legislation, industry standards, codes of practice and organisation policies and procedures.
