Pass It On: Driving Skills

Despite years of research, government and private projects and road safety campaigns, road trauma continues to be a significant personal and community issue. Few people will live their lives without being affected in some way by a driving related accident, injury or fatality, and yet we still do not pay enough attention to improving the driving skill standards of people on the roads.

It takes years of learning and practice to be able to achieve the level of performance and consistency required to be an expert driver. It is one of the most complex tasks we will ever learn, and potentially the most dangerous, and yet the training that we undertake is limited in it's scope and complexity. In our formative years we spend more time learning things like maths, sport and hobbies than we do the technical, physical and mental skills of driving, and once we become licensed most people do little to ensure that they continue to learn and become more skilled and consistently competent drivers. In fact, the reverse is the more common scenario. Over time we become more complacent, and bad habits become part of the accepted level of competence. As a result, the majority of motor vehicle accidents are caused by human error.

That's why we are looking for organisations to become involved in the PASS IT ON driver skills training program. We use scientific and evidence-based strategies, combined with elite performance training principles and technology, to get people to be safer and more consistently competent drivers.

Our goal is to get organisations within a specific geographical area to sponsor employees and community members to participate as a team so that those drivers can then go back into the community to teach others. The PASS IT ON program requires 18 people to participate in a 4 or 5 day course. An organisation can sponsor a whole group, or combine with other organisations within the same community to co-sponsor each team member. Following the training the team members are required to go back to theit community and begin the process of passing on their knowledge to at least two more people each. It is hoped that those people with then continue to teach others, and so on until a positive change in community driving standards and attitudes has been achieved.

You can't be an expert if you haven't been taught everything you need to know.
